It has been almost a month since our last VITA meeting. Well as many of us know everyone has about 2 more weeks to get there taxes done. Many of us volunteers would have enjoyed having one more day of VITA asssistance for our community. Many of us thought it would have been very helpful. because a lot of people that haven’t got there taxes done and are of low income are looking for places near them where they can get help. Eventhough we all know it would have probably been slow it would have been worth it to do it at least a couple of times the last week. Many of us are really looking forward to do this again next year! !

Our last VITA date was Saturday March 12, 2011. That day was slow for us. We had been open since 9:00 am and by 11:00 am we had only had two people come in and get there taxes done. It wasn’t very surprising because usually by March most people have their taxes done. There were only a couple of volunteers that actually came on this last day. Many students were happy it was the last day. While others hoped there could still be more dates for us to be able to go and help out at. Many of the volunteers stopped coming after about our second or third weekend meetings. Many students are looking forward to next year to be able to volunteer in VITA again.

After talking to many students in the VITA program and working with them I learned very much. One of the students that joined VITA said they had only joined VITA to get the 5 extra credits for school. Others said they joined it because they had nothing else to do but in the end they enjoyed it very much and they said they would do it again next year without a doubt. There is also the other students who joined it because they enjoy learning new things and volunteering to help the community. I talked to one student she seemed very dedicated, and after talking with her I learned that the best way to get something done is to be determined. Which is one reason that VITA is so successful is because the volunteers are so dedicated.

You Got To Love VITA!

VITA is a great volunteer program here at Hiram Johnson High School. This program is open to any student on campus that enjoys volunteering and has that extra time to participate. VITA              stands for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance. This program is designed to help low income families get there taxes done. In this program student’s get trained the basics to being able to do someone’s taxes. These students also get certified by the IRS. Most of the students that participate are JCBA students but we also have many other non- JCBA students participating.

Many students participate in this program for many reasons. Many students just enjoy volunteering and helping other people in their community. These students have participated at these events in different locations as well as here at Hiram Johnson high School. It also helps you gain a lot of knowledge to understanding the basics of income taxes. That’s also another reason many students decide to join the VITA program.
